A blog by PoppySeed team member Declan Foyle. He talks about the special things in life – the family home and the perfect brown bread.
It is more than just brown bread!
What does brown bread mean to you? To me it’s a whole lot more than just flour and wheat. To me, brown bread is coming through the front door and being ‘walloped’ by the fresh and comforting smell…. The aromas are so ‘ambrosial’ without a doubt. Every time that I walk through the door and see a magnificent loaf of brown bread centred perfectly on the table, my day is made. Not yet cut, and steam gently rising… The distinctive crunch from the bread when the knife breaks through to the soft crumb, just yum!
Now, the best bit, layered with some jam and butter, bold I know, and complemented with a warm cup of tea. Perfection to say the least!
I’ve always left my mother to take care of the brown bread. She loved it and therefore I have always seen it as her trademark. She was just too damn good at constructing the most perfect loaves every time without fail.
Due to COVID-19, It has been difficult knowing that I can’t travel home to Laois to enjoy my mother’s scrumptious brown bread. Thankfully, while spending lockdown in Galway I have had the pleasure of working with PoppySeed cafés. I am over the moon that they have filled the gap with their very own brown bread, just mouth-watering!
Recently, they have created a classic recipe in a take home mix and I successfully baked my first loaf of brown bread. Safe to say, the mother would be proud!
Brown bread doesn’t just remind me of home, it reminds me of being young. It reminds my mother of her home. And my grandmother, of her home again. Brown bread is generational and will always be a treasure in every home as it has repeatedly been a routine to gather around and sit whilst sharing a loaf and having a chat.
The humble slice of brown bread means home to me!
